Summary

The first daughter is for the Throne。
The second daughter is for the Wolf。

For fans of Uprooted and The Bear and the Nightingale comes a dark fantasy novel about a young woman who must be sacrificed to the legendary Wolf of the Wood to save her kingdom。 But not all legends are true, and the Wolf isn't the only danger lurking in the Wilderwood。

As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose-to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he'll return the world's captured gods。

Red is almost relieved to go。 Plagued by a dangerous power she can't control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can't hurt those she loves。 Again。

But the legends lie。 The Wolf is a man, not a monster。 Her magic is a calling, not a curse。 And if she doesn't learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood-and her world-whole。

This should have been a standalone。There were things about this book that I really liked, but unfortunately those things were severely diluted by inexpert attempts to build a broader story and add a hook for a sequel。 It's a huge shame, because there was a lot of potential here。It's not as dark as it wants to be。 It's not as romantic as it wants to be。 It doesn't have the found family vibe it wants to have。 The ingredients for all of those things are here, but they just aren't given enough time This should have been a standalone。There were things about this book that I really liked, but unfortunately those things were severely diluted by inexpert attempts to build a broader story and add a hook for a sequel。 It's a huge shame, because there was a lot of potential here。It's not as dark as it wants to be。 It's not as romantic as it wants to be。 It doesn't have the found family vibe it wants to have。 The ingredients for all of those things are here, but they just aren't given enough time to make them shine。 The constant cutaways from the main plot for 'interludes' that serve to build up the secondary plotline made all of the more interesting aspects feel watered down and underdeveloped。 The forest and its ambience were a strong point, but the constant back-and-forth from this setting meant that by page 250 the descriptions were just repetitive rather than evocative。The author's style is clearly still in the developmental phase (which isn't the worst thing; it's a debut, after all), but it could have benefited from more careful editing。 There's a LOT of repetition here, both of certain phrases, and sometimes of entire scenes。 There are also times when the tense is inconsistent between paragraphs。 I'm not sure if this is deliberate or just an oversight。 I think it may have been deliberate because it's usually accompanied by Sarah J Maas-style sentence fragments。。。 in which case, it certainly wasn't used masterfully, and only served to make me re-read the affected sentences because I thought I had missed a word or two。Perhaps you've noticed that I haven't mentioned any of the characters yet。 That's because each character has one (1) personality trait, and for most of them that trait is "I am fierce because I am willing to do anything to protect the person I love most"。 The one exception to this rule (view spoiler)[ Eammon, who I found mostly pretty bland, but I was at least interested in his dedication to protecting the Wilderwood (hide spoiler)] ends up also succumbing to it by the end of the book。If they had committed to a standalone and tightened up the story to focus on Red and her crew (rather than devoting 10-15% of the page count to Neve's particularly dry storyline); if they had leaned a bit more into the found-family dynamic and given the characters some more meaningful interactions; if they had been a bit more thorough and/or brutal with the line edits。。。 then this could have been a strong debut。 But as it is it's just mediocre。I'm not going to pick up the sequel, but if/when the author releases a brand new story I am cautiously optimistic about giving her another try。 。。。more

Initial ThoughtsI enjoyed this book。 I expected a Little Red Riding Hood retelling but it was more of a Beauty and the Beast story。 I liked Red and the Wolf quite a bit and thought that the Wilderwood was interesting and unique。 I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series。ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley。 Full review to be posted soon。

Amazing storytelling, well written。 I was thrown off by the random "f-bombs" towards the end of the book。 Took away from the magic of a fantasy land by throwing in the modern words。 The rest of the book reads like a period piece, completely in a different time and world。 Otherwise, looking forward to book #2!! I fell in love with the characters half way through, but the bond between Red and Eammon was weakly developed。 I did enjoy my evening reading this story and the escape to the enchanted Wilderwood。 I agree with other reviews that the book seems at first to be written for young adults, however, the story transitions to include more adult content towards the end。

This is a really fun take on Little Red Riding Hood! It was suspenseful and kept me turning pages and I will definitely be reading the next book in the series!

This book had elements of my favorite type of stories, but the execution was muddied。 Not the worst book I ever read, but it certainly could have been improved。 The world building was one of the weakest elements of this novel。 The beginning of the book had some clunky exposition that really slowed down the pace of the story。 I wanted to enjoy the whole vaguely sentient, magical forest, but the magic system and history was never properly explained。 It's a concept I generally like, but being kept This book had elements of my favorite type of stories, but the execution was muddied。 Not the worst book I ever read, but it certainly could have been improved。 The world building was one of the weakest elements of this novel。 The beginning of the book had some clunky exposition that really slowed down the pace of the story。 I wanted to enjoy the whole vaguely sentient, magical forest, but the magic system and history was never properly explained。 It's a concept I generally like, but being kept in the dark about the rules stopped me from fully embracing it。 I will say that if you liked the general vibe of Naomi Novik's Uprooted, you'll probably get some enjoyment out of this story。 I don't think that was a bad comp。 This story definitely draws more elements of Beauty and the Beast than Little Red Riding Hood。 Rest assured the Wolf, Eammon, doesn't act like the typical Beast character。 He's more brusque and contrite than disagreeable。 He's a likeable character。 Red fell a little flat for me, but I still mostly enjoyed her。 She's brave and determined。 As for their romance, I found it to be satisfying。 I wish we had more scenes of them together, but it wasn't bad。 Eammon's the monstery and magic boyfriend character trope that I unashamedly love and Red is the plucky and also magical girlfriend type that I appreciate。The side characters in this book I found to be pretty forgettable。 They really didn't add much to the story。 Whitten also failed to make me believe in the strength of Red and Neve's relationship which is making me wary about reading the sequel。 All in all, I'm disappointed that the book didn't live up to my expectations, but I'm not sure I'm ready to write this author off just yet。 。。。more

CW: blood, self harm in a big way, death, blood rituals Hmmmmm。 This one is kinda tough。 My main issue with it is that the first half, at least, needed more editing。 It got verrrry repetitive。 I love a sentient forest and the lore of this world is really cool。 It took me a long while to get emotionally attached to anyone, I think because of the lack of scene variety? Not sure。 But I did end up liking everyone and being intrigued and stuff。 I probably skim read like 90 pages in the middle。 Still, CW: blood, self harm in a big way, death, blood rituals Hmmmmm。 This one is kinda tough。 My main issue with it is that the first half, at least, needed more editing。 It got verrrry repetitive。 I love a sentient forest and the lore of this world is really cool。 It took me a long while to get emotionally attached to anyone, I think because of the lack of scene variety? I kept going back and forth on whether to give this 3 or 4 stars。 In the end, I tend to be more positive than not so I went with four。 It was a very slow start。 I had trouble connecting with Redarys and Neve, but as the story wore on Redarys certainly won me over。 The world that Hannah Whitten has created is A+ honestly。 It is very original and I absolutely loved it。 I loved Eammon。 I wish we had more Lyra & Fife。 I'm not sure if I'm going to want to read the second one because it's supposed to I kept going back and forth on whether to give this 3 or 4 stars。 In the end, I tend to be more positive than not so I went with four。 It was a very slow start。 I had trouble connecting with Redarys and Neve, but as the story wore on Redarys certainly won me over。 The world that Hannah Whitten has created is A+ honestly。 It is very original and I absolutely loved it。 I loved Eammon。 I wish we had more Lyra & Fife。 I'm not sure if I'm going to want to read the second one because it's supposed to be more Neve focused and she just wasn't it for me。 Overall, a great read! 。。。more

It gets three stars because the first 150 pages felt entirely too much like Naomi Novik's Uprooted。 Once it shook that off, however, it started going at a gallop。 Off now to scour the internet for information about its upcoming sequel。 It gets three stars because the first 150 pages felt entirely too much like Naomi Novik's Uprooted。 Once it shook that off, however, it started going at a gallop。 Off now to scour the internet for information about its upcoming sequel。 。。。more

2。5/5 StarsI'm a huge fan of any type of fairy tale retellings, in particular Beauty and the Beast。 So I for sure thought I would love this book。 However, I thought it was just okay。 It wasn't bad, but I didn't connect with the characters at all。 The characters were flat and didn't really grow or stick out much to me。 The book says it's for fans of The Bear and the Nightingale and Uprooted。 I enjoy both of those books, however, in my opinion this book was not similar (at least writing style wise 2。5/5 StarsI'm a huge fan of any type of fairy tale retellings, in particular Beauty and the Beast。 So I for sure thought I would love this book。 However, I thought it was just okay。 It wasn't bad, but I didn't connect with the characters at all。 The characters were flat and didn't really grow or stick out much to me。 The book says it's for fans of The Bear and the Nightingale and Uprooted。 I enjoy both of those books, however, in my opinion this book was not similar (at least writing style wise) to either of those。 I just felt like everything was moving too fast and the explanations weren't very great for some fo the things in the world。 This book isn't very memorable, so I don't see myself wanting to continue the series。 There are plenty of other fairy tale retelling books that are better than this, but if your like me and feel like you've read them all, I'd say give this one a go! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I tried really hard to love this book, but unfortunately there was a lot of confusion for me because of some missing plot developments。Some examples:1) What are the god kings supposed to do when they are released? Why do people praise them? 2) Before their first encounter, why did Eammon allow Red to barely find her way to his fortress when he didn’t want any more death on his hands and knew that the forest wanted to eat her as a Second Daughter? He was expecting her and it doesn’t make sense that he would just let her wander on her own in this deathly forest。 3) I didn’t realize why the priestesses were dying one by one in the climax of the novel。 It was only revealed chapters later that they were killing themselves as blood tribute, whereas I thought that Raffe was killing them one by one with Lyra’s weapon which she had thrown outside the forest earlier。 I think the author made assumptions about the reader’s assumptions, so little things just didn’t make sense or it just seemed like opportunity missed to give the reader a surprise。I wish there was more development of the inter-personal relations among all the characters before all the major action took place。 I didn’t care that Arrick died because I didn’t have a glimpse of his childhood or his romance with Red in a way that made him interesting。 I believed him to be a jerk from the beginning scene where he is forcefully attempting to make Red verbalize her love for him。 Also, I was annoyed with Neve the whole time because I only saw her as a 1-dimensional character with one sole purpose, so I couldn’t have empathy for all of her blatant ignorance of the people conspiring around her。 I wanted more psychological intensity, instead of just being told that she felt guilty for being first born。 The language itself felt a little forced, as though the dark academia had to be seeping from every page in order to fulfill the dark fantasy genre。 There was one point where I became really excited about the formation of the shadow monsters。 A combination of animal skin and bones and woods tied together in a semi-human resemblance was very dark and the type of spooky I expected from how the book was hyped。 The rest of the book felt like reiterations of twisting vines for human veins and several different ways of describing blood-red lips。 This book is more closely related to Beauty and the Beast than Red Riding Hood。 If you took away her red cloak, it would have practically no ties to the Red Riding Hood Story as it’s revealed that “wolf” is just a mix-up with the word “warden。”Overall, I couldn’t stop myself from comparing this book to Naomi Novik’s “Uprooted” which had similar story structure but with a lot more whimsy and endearing characters。 。。。more

I'm totally hooked on this story and can't wait for more! This did read more YA than not, even though it's being marketed as an adult fantasy。 I found it pretty PG and the 'romance' between Red and the Wolf honestly wasn't my favorite part of the story, I much preferred Neve and Raffe's characters and the other fantastical elements like the disembodied voices and evil trees。 I'm also not a huge fan of the comparisons that are being made to this book and The bear and the nightingale/Winternight trilogy (I'm a HUGE fan of that series and to me they are completely different)。**Lost one star, because the male narrator in the audiobook really annoyed me - I feel like this will be one where I actually prefer the print edition and who wouldn't with that gorgeous cover! 。。。more
